Chicago Electric Stapler/Nailer

The Power of Power!

I’ve often admired Norm Abram of “This Old House” as he effortlessly popped brads, straight into molding as fast as he could pull the trigger of his electric or pneumatic nailer. Of course, I didn’t have a “New Yankee Workshop”, and really couldn’t justify the purchase of a power stapler/nailer, for myself.

However, it recently came time to re-cover our wooden kitchen chairs. I pulled out my trusty old manual stapler, and hit a few staples through the cloth and into the hard pressboard below. Not a great result! That pressboard is really HARD STUFF! I couldn’t imagine having to do this more than a hundred times by hand.

Harbor Freight sells the Chicago Electric Stapler/nailer Model 93749 for under $20. That’s less than the cost of many manual staplers. Reduce this price by using one of their ever-present coupons, and the Chicago unit is a real bargain.

I took one home, loaded up the included staples, and, “Wham, Wham, Wham!” What a pleasure! Norm would have been proud of me.

Loading up the strip of nails was a little harder to figure out. From the picture in the instruction manual, it appeared that the user would just drop the strip of nails into the same slot as the staples. I couldn’t figure out how they would center themselves to fire. It turns out that the strip must be loaded into the outside edge of one of the vertical sidebars of the staple slot. Think of a nail as being a one sided staple. :-)

All-in-all, I’m very happy with this powerful and useful tool.

Cool. Dual purpose tool. :)

I run a few electric and pnuematic tools. I've found that the fastest way to mung up a powered nailer or stapler is to use nails or staples that were not specifically intended for that tool. YMMV.
